Amazing People Education – Teacher, Doctor, Woman!

Posted on Updated on

In conjunction with the recent Women’s Equality Day and Maria Montessori’s Birthday

m,ontessori

This week, we celebrate Maria Montessori’s birthday. Born in the 1800’s, Maria was an amazing woman and her story is yet another example of what can be achieved if we are determined to do so.

Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator and innovator, acclaimed for her educational method that builds on the way children naturally learn. Clever and multi-talented, her teaching methods of early childhood education are still in force today.

montessori studying

Growing up in Rome, a paradise of libraries, museums, and fine schools, Maria was well-schooled and an avid reader, which was unusual for Italian women of that time. Her thirst for knowledge took root and she immersed herself in many fields of study.

Perseverance

Maria was a sterling student, confident, ambitious, and unwilling to be limited by traditional expectations for women. At age 13 she entered an all-boys technical institute to prepare for a career in engineering. In time, however, she changed her mind, deciding to become a doctor instead. She applied to the University of Rome’s medical program, but was rejected. Maria took additional courses to better prepare her for entrance to the medical school and persevered.

montessori doctor

With great effort she gained admittance, opening the door a bit wider for future women in the field. She graduated from medical school and became Italy’s first female physician.

Breaking Barriers

Maria is an inspiring role model for girls, as she had to overcome prejudice to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. When her first application at medical school was refused, Maria stayed firm in her belief and told the interviewing professor, “I know I shall become a doctor”.

Bunche Montessori, Fort Wayne, Indiana

Maria Montessori believed education was essential to the achievement of peace and went on to develop a revolutionary teaching method. It grew into a movement that spread all over the world.

Questions:

  • When and where was Maria born?
  • When did she graduate from the University as a Doctor of Medicine?
  • What was the name of the University she graduated from?
  • What prompted Maria to look into the welfare and education of children?
  • CHALLENGE: Find out what the difference is between traditional classrooms and the Montessori classroom.
  • DEBATE: Create a debate about each method and see what your audience has to say about each classroom style. Who is ‘For’ and who is ‘Against’?

Amazing People Education – PARENTS DAY

Posted on Updated on

PARENTS DAY

America celebrates Parents Day on the 4th Sunday in July.

family 3

Parents have done so much for us, giving us life, nurturing us, advising, teaching, guiding, and have been there through thick and thin. It’s a great opportunity to say thank you. There are many wonderful individuals who have taken on the role of a parent in some way. Thank you to all the ‘parents’ around the world.

In recognition of parents world-wide, we have selected four amazing people whose life stories were inspiring. We can learn so much from these outstanding individuals.

They were like ‘parents’ to many who they helped during their lifetime. From caring, nursing, teaching, loving, development and progression, they have been amazing role models for all of us, and we should make sure the future generations know who they are and what they did.

Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale – as a nurse, she developed an idea of ‘spiritual motherhood’ and saw herself as the mother of the men of the British army—”my children“—whom she had saved. With her lamp in hand, Florence Nightingale became known as “The Lady with the Lamp” as she checked on and cared for the wounded soldiers during long, lonely and painful nights.

Maria Montessori – believed education was essential to the achievement of peace. Maria had a great respect and interest in a child’s psychological, physical and social development, and went on to establish a revolutionary teaching method that has inspired many. It was, and still remains, a vital part of many childrens learning and development years.

Jonas Salk

Jonas Salk– Many children died or were left with a disabling paralysis when they were afflicted with polio. When Jonas was sitting in a park and watching children play, he realized how important his work against polio was. He saw that there were thousands of children and adults who would never walk again if they contracted this disease. He felt a duty to continue his work and went on to discover and develop the first successful polio vaccine.

Gilbreth_01
Lillian Gilbreth

Lillian Gilbreth – one of the first female engineers and psychologists, Lillian Gilbreth is a true early example of the ‘working mother’. How did she cope with, not only developing and running a successful business, but also mothering 12 children after the death of her husband when she was only 46 years of age. Her work on time management is world-renowned and her classic publications are still referred to and respected today.

Activities:

  • When was Florence Nightingale born?
  • Maria Montessori developed a unique teaching method, but prior to that, she was a . . . . . . ?
  • When did children first receive the polio vaccine?
  • Lillian Gilbreth developed new methods for analyzing work, called ‘Therbligs’. How did this name come about?
  • Discussion –  discuss what their greatest achievements meant at the time to others and then discuss what you think the impact would have been today without their input and discoveries.
