Susan B. Anthony – FREE Educational eBook and Audio for July

Posted on Updated on

As Americans celebrate 4th of July, we often think of the ‘founding fathers’ who were significant in the shaping of America. But what of the amazing women who selflessly gave up much of their lives for the future of other generations, particularly for the rights of women? Anthony, Susan B. P 001

Susan B. Anthony made astounding contributions to the women’s suffrage movement. Her fight for equality and to abolish slavery has inspired many individuals all over the world and she is revered by many.

At the tender age of 16, Susan already had very strong views about slavery. Campaigning against slavery and equality became her life’s fight. Her ability and determination made her a formidable activist as she fought for women’s right to vote and the needs of mothers and girls, as they were the subject of much discrimination.

She published journals, books, was arrested and met with President Theodore Roosevelt!

Her story is such a powerful reminder of how we can change the lives of others.

Together with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan founded the New York Women’s State Temperance Society, the Women’s Loyal National League, the American Equal Rights Association, the National American Woman Suffrage Association and created a women’s rights newspaper. They certainly started ‘a Revolution!’

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The newspaper’s motto was, “Men their rights, and nothing more; women their rights, and nothing less.”

“Oh, if I could but live another century and see the fruition of all the work for women! There is so much yet to be done” ~ Susan B. Anthony

Imagine the pride and excitement these amazing individuals would feel seeing what some of their work has resulted in today! We now understand fully, the sacrifices they made so many years ago. We must ensure that generations to come, understand and get to know them.

CLASS CHALLENGE: This month we invite students to ROLE PLAY!

  • Create a gathering of reporters, professionals, politicians and citizens of the era. Susan is being ‘interviewed’ following the announcement of the right for women to vote.
  • What will the ‘audience’ ask her?
  • How will Susan respond?

This may appear a simple task, however the task should be extended beyond the voting topic. Can your students ‘think outside the box’ and ask other questions? eg. in her early years, what prompted Susan to go against tradition? There are many avenues by which to create a topical role play inspired by the life of Susan B. Anthony. Please see our TOOLKIT below, for some ideas! anthony arrested
