Amazing People Education – Teacher, Doctor, Woman!

Posted on Updated on

In conjunction with the recent Women’s Equality Day and Maria Montessori’s Birthday

m,ontessori

This week, we celebrate Maria Montessori’s birthday. Born in the 1800’s, Maria was an amazing woman and her story is yet another example of what can be achieved if we are determined to do so.

Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator and innovator, acclaimed for her educational method that builds on the way children naturally learn. Clever and multi-talented, her teaching methods of early childhood education are still in force today.

montessori studying

Growing up in Rome, a paradise of libraries, museums, and fine schools, Maria was well-schooled and an avid reader, which was unusual for Italian women of that time. Her thirst for knowledge took root and she immersed herself in many fields of study.

Perseverance

Maria was a sterling student, confident, ambitious, and unwilling to be limited by traditional expectations for women. At age 13 she entered an all-boys technical institute to prepare for a career in engineering. In time, however, she changed her mind, deciding to become a doctor instead. She applied to the University of Rome’s medical program, but was rejected. Maria took additional courses to better prepare her for entrance to the medical school and persevered.

montessori doctor

With great effort she gained admittance, opening the door a bit wider for future women in the field. She graduated from medical school and became Italy’s first female physician.

Breaking Barriers

Maria is an inspiring role model for girls, as she had to overcome prejudice to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. When her first application at medical school was refused, Maria stayed firm in her belief and told the interviewing professor, “I know I shall become a doctor”.

Bunche Montessori, Fort Wayne, Indiana

Maria Montessori believed education was essential to the achievement of peace and went on to develop a revolutionary teaching method. It grew into a movement that spread all over the world.

Questions:

  • When and where was Maria born?
  • When did she graduate from the University as a Doctor of Medicine?
  • What was the name of the University she graduated from?
  • What prompted Maria to look into the welfare and education of children?
  • CHALLENGE: Find out what the difference is between traditional classrooms and the Montessori classroom.
  • DEBATE: Create a debate about each method and see what your audience has to say about each classroom style. Who is ‘For’ and who is ‘Against’?

Amazing People Education – Mother Teresa

Posted on

A beacon of hope, humanity and compassion to all, Mother Teresa’s personal story will inspire many.

* Can she also inspire us in the workplace and education?
mother-teresa

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one”

With a rare sense of wisdom, destiny, courage and dedication, Mother Teresa left her native Albania to pursue the vocation of teaching in Calcutta, India. Unable to ignore the desperation of the needy and sick, Mother Teresa became a missionary. Today, she is credited with helping hundreds of thousands of the world’s poorest people and is recognized as the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta by the Catholic Church.

After she founded the Missionaries of Charity, and with the assistance of many dedicated others, Mother Teresa ran homes and hospices for many suffering with HIV/Aids, leprosy and tuberculosis. She organized mobile clinics, soup kitchens, children’s and family counselling programs, orphanages and schools.mother teresa

Mother Teresa was the recipient of numerous honors including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

In 2003, she was beatified as the “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta”.

How can the story of Mother Teresa, be applied in our private lives and within the workplace?

The Poor Entrepreneur

There is no doubt, that Mother Teresa herself, was an entrepreneur. Vastly different to entrepreneurs known for their wealth, or access to wealth, that enabled them to do great acts for others. Mother Teresa worked her entire life with the poor. With no hospitals or clinics, she began working to give them medical treatment, which led to the establishment of Missionaries of Charities all over the world. Her actions and dedication show us how those traits alone, can ‘move mountains’.

Moving Mountains Businessmen moving a mountain uphill. The men & mountain and background are on separate labeled layers.

‘CAN DO’ The message: Stay true to your convictions, don’t allow negatives to stand in the way of what you know you can be achieved. With your determined nature and assistance, you too, can ‘move mountains’.

Leaders and Managers

Many leaders and managers can take a leaf out of Mother Teresa’s journey. Not only did she give up any idea of a normal working life and a family of her own, she also lived among the poorest people in Calcutta. This truly sparked her drive and ambition as she lived exactly the same way as they did, eating the same food and sharing their pain. Not motivated by power or money, she achieved exactly what she had set out to do and she is remembered and revered with much respect.

colorful SUCSESStext barcode, vector

‘SUCCESSFUL LEADERSHIP’ The message: As leaders, we should always remember to get to know the experiences of those we lead.  What effect do our actions as leaders have on others? Do we truly understand their roles in the workplace or at school and what we expect from them? Putting ourselves in ‘their shoes’ will refine our own thoughts on how to assist others, to achieve better results.

Activity:

You will note many words in red above. * The answer to that very first question – absolutely. Whether in our personal lives, education or work, those words are vital aspects and traits for successful interaction with others and for a positive outcome, whatever it is we are hoping to achieve.

  • List another 10 words that can be used to promote yourself and others, to promote the goals you want, and to promote positive thoughts and actions.
  • Then explain how you believe each word may assist the outcome of your future and that of those around you.

Amazing People Education – Lessons from Elvis (or Ed Sheeran)?

Posted on Updated on

Elvis Presley

Yes. Lessons from Elvis! What sort of lessons are we suggesting from this iconic singer who gyrated his way onto television and the big screen?

The anniversary of the death of ‘The King’ is August 16. Elvis left behind, a huge fan base, music and movie memories and…………..lessons.

elvis 1954 jailhouse rock
Elvis 1957

Believe it or not, entertainers like Elvis, can show us how to follow our dreams, how to persevere and make things happen. Lessons on how to utilise our ideas, push forward and to chase our goals no matter what. Few successful entertainers would have let anything stand in their way to achieve their goals.

Often, the younger generation who are looking for assistance in development and career directions, like to be stimulated with the achievements of those that they can be ‘more in tune with’. More often than not, students are given examples about famous people like successful business people, doctors, nurses, engineers and architects.

Young people are always searching for something new and often they relate better to ‘other’ unique individuals. As they embark on their own journey, future generations need inspirational ideas that reflect more modern times.

Looking towards a bright, successful future

Entertainers are perfect examples of the traits required to succeed. Think about their careers in the entertainment industry. They constantly have to be better than the rest and better than their last performance, otherwise their careers are in jeopardy. They may have a team of assistants, but everything ‘rides’ on their own personal performances. That’s a lot of pressure!

Performance Review and Discussion as a Concept
Traits for success

Look at the following traits: Ambition, ideas, determination, goals, boldness, conviction, dedication, energy  and self-confidence. Entertainers would have to posses all those traits and more to be successful in their careers.

How did Elvis do it?

Elvis had to overcome an embarrassing stutter, so it wasn’t all ‘smooth sailing’ on his journey to stardom. In 1953, Elvis went to Sun Records to record songs ‘supposedly’ as a gift for his mother. Later, biographers suggested that Elvis chose to go to Sun hoping to be discovered. If this was the idea he had in mind, then Elvis clearly displayed  a very clear thought process with a goal in mind. It was a great idea! He had singing and acting talent, but without the traits to go with that talent, he would not have succeeded.

Rejection and Persistence

Elvis had to deal with several rejections at the beginning. He failed an audition for a local vocal quartet. They said he couldn’t sing and did not have an ear for harmony. After another audition as a vocalist, Elvis was rejected and was advised to continue driving trucks because he would never make it as a singer.

Did Elvis give up?

Just a year later on July 19, 1954, Elvis released his first commercial single, “That’s alright” and as they say, “the rest is history”. Elvis never wavered from his belief and what he wanted to achieve. Clearly, having the right attitude and desires, helped Elvis to reach his goals and to maintain consistency in the entertainment industry for many years.

Elvis Presley is regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, and he was dubbed “the King of Rock and Roll”, or simply, “the King”.

  • When and where was Elvis born?
  • When was Elvis given his first guitar?
  • What was the nickname of Elvis’ manager, Tom Parker?
  • How old was Elvis when he received the Lifetime Of Achievement Award?
  • Open discussions about today’s entertainers. Who is a worthy entertainer that has displayed the traits to succeed? eg. Ed Sheeran is a remarkable performer.

Fast becoming a modern day philanthropist, Sheeran has performed for many charities. His relaxed approach displaying a true selfless attitude toward others including his fans, makes Ed Sheeran an entertainer our younger generation can look up to. Both in terms of his mild-mannered success and his ability to share his life without expectations is inspiring.
