4th of July – ‘We The People’ – Engaging Activities

Posted on Updated on

Celebrate 4th July!

We the People

franklin 1 - CopyBenjamin Franklin, one of the leaders of the American Revolution said, “We must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.”

He lived to tell the story of the famous victory over the British Army of King George III and the formation of the USA Government in 1789. Now, school students can recreate those exciting times with innovative music and drama resources from Amazing People Worldwide.

‘We The People’ is based on the first words of the American Constitution.  Those words are the defining anthem song featured and reflects the spirit of the revolutionaries, who changed the course of history.

This video link, ‘We the People’, is an excerpt from an educational video series that we have produced.Play demo button

The video assists teachers and students to have a more personal engagement and understanding of the important principles about the USA and Amazing Americans. They can be used in various ways, including school assemblies, drama classes, history and also character and culture education.  (We also have the Australian First Fleet and the British Cavaliers and Roundheads – covering other cultures and parts of the curriculum).
washingtonIn 1765, a group called The Sons of Liberty formed and opposed British rule without fair representation. It was the start of the American Revolution and the battles that led to the formation of a democratic federation.

Twenty four years later, George Washington, who had commanded the revolutionary army, became the first President of the USA.
Students learn by participating. In doing so, they develop a better understanding of history, geography, culture and conflict. Most important, they learn about themselves and grow in confidence.

‘We The People’ is an opportunity for students to develop their own abilities through drama.

Famous and Inspirational Americans

washingtonWatch our AVATAR video as George Washington talks about the Declaration of Independence.

edisonThomas Edison was a great American inventor, scientist and businessman and the third most prolific inventor in history.

lincoln-AbeAbraham Lincoln was a man who stood up for his beliefs and deserves credit for setting the foundations for unifying diverse states into a country.

fordIt is interesting to see how people like Henry Ford also developed their careers. He came from a poor family background to be one of the most successful American businessmen of all time.
tubmanLife stories such as that of brave people like Harriet Tubman a slave, are fascinating. How did she overcome those early, harsh days? They may be the exceptions, but America does have a habit of producing people who stand out.

On Independence Day, we remember and appreciate these wonderful Americans. They came from all walks of life, but they had the same drive and belief that they could achieve their dreams. Their dreams made a difference to the whole nation. From Colonial Men and Women, Politicians, Inventors, Entrepreneurs and Doctors, their stories are the foundation of America and you can bring them into your classroom.

What do you do about over-use of technology both in the workplace, school or home?

We can all make a difference in any environment by:

  • Setting sensible and fair boundaries. Eg. use devices only during breaks, and no texting at meal times.
  • At home, encourage other activities. Visit a ‘game’ store and discover the new board games that are available now!
  • Find ways to show your family that it’s not a ‘parent’ thing, but rather social behavior that has got out of hand.

MEET THE MAN WHO SAID:

“I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.” Albert Einstein

Einstein, Albert. P - avatar

Whilst we do not agree of course with every word Einstein said, it does provoke thoughts about how technology interferes with some social aspects of our lives. We need to embrace our relationships without mobile phones constantly interrupting!

For teachers and parents:

CLASS DISCUSSION:

  • Once you have gone through this article, open up discussions about how we can help each other to be more responsible with the use of technology, but in particular, mobile phone use.
  • Ask them to be honest – what would they do if they had children of their own?
  • Have the class make suggestions on large posters and place around the room.

Amazing People Education: Are you thinking of becoming a Doctor? Women with can-do attitudes!

Posted on Updated on

Elizabeth Blackwell was born on February 3, 1821.

Doctor, reformer, educator!

EBlackwell2

She paved the way for women in medicine.

Despite many rejections and criticisms, Elizabeth Blackwell persevered and went on to become one of the greatest pioneers in the development of health care for women.  She trained many female doctors along the way and her story is so inspirational.

It is accepted now that females may decide to study to become a doctor.

  • Can you imagine, the prestige bestowed upon Elizabeth when she became the FIRST woman to receive a medical degree in the USA?
  • Then to be named the FIRST female to be registered as a doctor in the UK?

It was no simple feat. Certainly, her work led her to be admired and revered. Elizabeth_blackwell_stamp

“Who inspires you?”  Perhaps Elizabeth Blackwell will inspire you in whatever you choose to do. We often lean towards people who have achieved their goals, particularly if they had to ‘climb over’obstacles in their way.

So, if you are interested in studying to become a doctor, here’s a ‘must-read’ story.

blackwell

To know and appreciate the background of women in medicine, gives you an insight into the difficulties they had to achieve their goals. Yes, many of us work and study hard today, but we have many pioneers to thank for the research and discoveries that we, at times, may take for granted.

We need YOU now, to forge forward developing new techniques and methods and possible new discoveries – as we know, there is always something to learn. YOU are now the ‘Elizabeth Blackwell’s’ of the future. Meet Elizabeth and let her be your guide to success.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Where was Elizabeth born?
  2. What was the name of the college that accepted her application to study to become a doctor?
  3. When she graduated, no-one would hire Elizabeth. Where did she go to practice medicine?
  4. When and where did she open her first practice?

Birthday of a humble peasant teenager who became a Saint!

Posted on Updated on

JOAN of ARC

Joan of Arc

  • Can you imagine, as a teenager, confronting a royal leader, let alone leading soldiers into battle?
  • What would the young people of today do when confronted with such unimaginable decisions?

Joan of Arc was born on January 6 around the year 1412. Only a teenager, when she led French armies into battle during the Hundred Years War, Joan of Arc (or Jeanne d’Arc), became a folk heroine of France and a Roman Catholic Saint.  Born a peasant girl with little education, ‘The Maid of Orleans’, persuaded the King and army leaders that there was a way to beat the English army, all based on a vision from God. She will long be cherished, as one of the most revered females in history.

On May 16, 1920, Joan of Arc was canonized a Saint. France celebrates this fearless girl with a festival in May each year and May 30th is her Feast Day.

Joan of ArcWe invite you to share this incredible, brave and fearless story from our on-line library about Joan of Arc as an inspiration to others. If your belief is strong, you will find the courage to take on the challenges that life puts before you. If we can learn from the amazing people who bravely gave up so much and fought for what they believed in, maybe we can inspire others to try that little bit more or work that little bit harder.

  • In business and the career sector, what can we learn from such courage?
  • How can we utilize these inspirational stories in the workplace and in schools?
  • What leadership skills are required to lead your team to success?

Managers, leaders, teachers and even parents – what can you do to enhance your leadership qualities?

Dr Charles Margerison highlights points regarding leadership skills.

The Big 5 Problem Solving Skills for Managers

Education Around the World

Posted on Updated on

What are the education statistics from around the world? What regions have the highest college graduations? Do teachers around the globe share similar teaching ideals?

limerickTutorial

Education methods and standards, including results, vary around the world. However, one essential ingredient is CRITICAL THINKING and ACTION LEARNING.

Most teachers see learning as a process where students are given the opportunity to actively engage in the classroom, rather than become passive recipients of information. Teachers realize that they need to encourage students to make their own inquiry, thereby supporting the importance of independent, critical thinking.

Welcome to Amazing People Learning. Teachers and facilitators can discover a unique suite of professional development resources that support ACTION LEARNING.  These resources enable learners to develop problem-solving, communication and leadership skills that can contribute to organizations working more effectively.

screenshot-amazingpeople-learning-sm

Allowing students to practice tasks that require critical thinking or team work, will give them the skills and the confidence they need to enter the work force. These factors are essential in success in this highly competitive world. Classrooms with a positive atmosphere, where active teaching practices are developed, mean more students are fully engaged in the learning process.

What are the easy and the difficult parts of teaching? Some say, given the various face to face teaching requirements, that finding time to prepare is a major difficulty. Others say it is ensuring the control and management of the class. However, one topic comes up regularly. That is, what should one do in the first five minutes of a class?

‘The atmosphere and tone is set in the first five minutes.’ The students will be either turning on and becoming interested, or turning off and not concentrating. It is in the first five minutes of a class that a teacher sets the agenda and gains the involvement of students. It is necessary to provide a focus point to capture their attention.

Amazing People Worldwide has been working with schools in the UK, US and Australia over the past five years. Our mission is to raise student aspirations across our schools network through amazing people stories and associated cross-curricular learning. The Schools Resource Pack includes:

Support for this approach has been overwhelmingly positive. Teachers and students tell us over and over again, how the stories of people make study and learning easier AND more engaging.

Do you want to become an AMAZING PEOPLE SCHOOL?

Introducing An Inspirational School Program that will help to:

bennelong

‘Heroes of the Great Southern Land’ is the title that refers to all those involved, and who came from very different cultures. They were indeed all heroes. This production re-lives the incredible voyage of the first settlers, their outstanding achievements, and the impact it had on Aboriginal tribes who lived in the areas named Botany Bay and Sydney Cove. The lyrics and music reflect the stories of both groups, and their survival against the odds.

S - Sydney, Raising the flag

What are the benefits and features?

  1. Focuses on the raising of student aspirations, through inspirational story sharing, and cross-curricular learning.
  2. Offers an engaging way for students to learn about culture, history geographical exploration, and environmental issues.

  7. Schools can enter drama championships as part of the exercise.

Just imagine …..
Botany Bay Gov A PhillipThe scene was set ….. sentences had been pronounced.  The wind blew strongly as the
sails on the old boats were raised. The day for deportation had arrived.
On May 13th 1787, over 1400 people set forth in eleven old sailing boats from Portsmouth, England, to a place called New South Wales.

About half the people were adjudged to be convicts.  They were at sea for 260 days before they finally disembarked, to set up a penal colony in what is now Sydney, Australia. Upon arrival, there were no homes, or shops, or facilities to cater for over 1400 people. The Aboriginal tribes-people, who had lived there for thousands of years, stood on the cliff tops and watched, no doubt, with surprise and trepidation.S - Pemulwy - for Sydney. Natives and boat
