What do you do about over-use of technology both in the workplace, school or home?

We can all make a difference in any environment by:

  • Setting sensible and fair boundaries. Eg. use devices only during breaks, and no texting at meal times.
  • At home, encourage other activities. Visit a ‘game’ store and discover the new board games that are available now!
  • Find ways to show your family that it’s not a ‘parent’ thing, but rather social behavior that has got out of hand.

MEET THE MAN WHO SAID:

“I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.” Albert Einstein

Einstein, Albert. P - avatar

Whilst we do not agree of course with every word Einstein said, it does provoke thoughts about how technology interferes with some social aspects of our lives. We need to embrace our relationships without mobile phones constantly interrupting!

For teachers and parents:

CLASS DISCUSSION:

  • Once you have gone through this article, open up discussions about how we can help each other to be more responsible with the use of technology, but in particular, mobile phone use.
  • Ask them to be honest – what would they do if they had children of their own?
  • Have the class make suggestions on large posters and place around the room.

Amazing People Education – Letter to Coco Chanel

Posted on Updated on

Gabrielle Dorziat

 May 1912

My dear Coco,

I thoroughly enjoyed our day together last week. That hat, my goodness darling, that hat I modeled for you? I must have it!  All my friends are dying to see your next creations. My dear, they are waiting with great fervor to buy up all those beautiful hats. What am I to do? Ah, I must simply make you my exclusive milliner!

Dearest Coco, what is that creative little mind of yours dreaming up today? All my friends are saying that you will be famous one day! Maybe one day people all over the world will be talking about you. Maybe women will be wearing not just your hats, but dresses, coats, lingerie or maybe fragrances and bags and…oh my dear, I could go on and on.

Well my dear, I must go now. I am so exhausted from my theatre performance last night. It was a full house and we received a standing ovation.

Ps. I have popped in a little photo of me from the magazine in that gorgeous hat! I look quite stunning don’t you think?

 Meet Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel, P

Coco Chanel was born on August 19, 1883.

She was, and still is, one of the most influential style icons of all time. Everyone knows the Chanel brand, but few know the inspirational rags-to-riches story behind it. Who would have known that this humble girl born in a poor house, would achieve such phenomenal success! Coco Chanel is still regarded as a fashion icon, long after her death.

Coco was known for her incredible ambition and determination throughout her life. She associated with the ‘right circles’ and together with her unique talent, she achieved both success as a business woman and acquired great social prominence.

Lessons from High Achievers

Successful individuals like Coco Chanel, identified their unique talents and developed them to produce remarkable outputs that shaped the world in a variety of ways.

“Hard times arouse an instinctive desire for authenticity”, Coco Chanel.

Your Goals

A good starting point when thinking about your future goals, is to look at what areas you are going to develop.  Coco would have honed in on her sewing skills and made decisions based on what she knows best and felt comfortable in developing. Developing is an ongoing activity, as one continually needs to review and improve existing processes.

To achieve goals we need to take action

The old model has been to teach, learn and do, however, it is far more effective to begin with action.  Once we take action, then that is in fact ‘doing’ something, and from that, we in turn have learned something.  So it is a bit of a twist on the old school of thinking.  It is well established that people develop competence by taking action.

Strategy

Coco Chanel’s  initial marketing strategy was to generate a buzz around her new perfume fragrance by hosting what was essentially a promotional event, where she invited a group of elite friends to dine with her in an elegant restaurant. The success was immediate and phenomenal. Chanel’s friend  exclaimed: “It was like a winning lottery ticket!”

Business Action

Amazing people like Coco Chanel, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Helena Rubinstein, all have one thing in common – they all became multi-millionaires without going to a University or a Business School! Instead they chose to get into ‘business action’ and learn from experience.  They just DID IT!

 Amazing Careers and Talent Development

Class Activity:

José Iván Bernardo VázquezYou have been given a new product to promote, to ‘get’ it known to the public and to approach retailers to place this product in their store/s.

  • What is the product? (The world is your oyster! Let your imagination run wild!)
  • What are your strategies to market and develop the product, that will encourage the public to buy it?

Questions:

  • What Christian name was Coco given at birth?
  • How did she learn to sew?
  • In what year did Coco open her millinery boutique at 21 Rue Cambon, Paris?
  • What very successful product was launched on May 5, 1921?

His voyages enabled great leaps forward in the field of navigation and had an enormous effect on the history of the Western World.

Students give ‘the thumbs up’ to the exciting world of technology in the classroom!

Activities:

  • Where was Christopher Columbus born?
  • Before he commenced an apprenticeship as a business agent, Columbus travelled the sea as a ….. ? You may be surprised!!
  • Who sponsored his first exploration?
  • What was the name of the agreement they signed?
  • In what year did Columbus set sail on his second voyage of discovery?

Task:

  • Draw a picture showing Columbus as he sees land for the first time in the distant horizon. Add a caption to your picture describing the scene you have created.

0.32 Study at home to prepare

Are you thinking of becoming a Doctor?

This week we celebrate the birthday of Elizabeth Blackwell, born on February 3, 1821. She was a remarkable woman. Not only because she was the FIRST female doctor in the USA, but because she was also so much more! Doctor, reformer, educator, meet Dr Elizabeth Blackwell.

It is accepted now that females may decide to study to become a doctor. Can you imagine the prestige bestowed upon Elizabeth Blackwell when she became the FIRST woman to receive a medical degree in the USA, and also to be named the FIRST female to be registered as a doctor in the UK? It was not a simple task!

Despite many rejections and criticisms, she persevered and went on to become one of the greatest pioneers in the development of health care for women.  Elizabeth trained many female doctors along the way and her story is nothing short of inspirational.

Elizabeth_blackwell_stamp
In her honour, she was commemorated on a postage stamp.

So, if you are interested in studying to become a doctor, here’s a ‘must-read’ story. To know and appreciate the background of women in medicine, gives you an insight into the difficulties they had to achieve their goals. Yes, many of us work and study hard today, but we have many pioneers to thank for the research and discoveries that we, at times, may take for granted.

We need YOU now to forge forward developing new techniques and methods and possible new discoveries – as we know, there is always something to learn. YOU are now the “Elizabeth Blackwell’s” of the future. Meet Elizabeth and let her be your inspiration.

heart 2Therefore, we are forever grateful to pioneering heart surgeon, Dr Christiaan Barnard, for his determination and skill that created hope for those suffering from cardiac problems.

Christian Barnard - Copy

Christiaan Barnard was born in November 1922 in South Africa. One of his brothers died of heart problems and perhaps this urged Christiaan to study medicine. He went on to specialise in cardiothoracic surgery.

Christiaan Barnard performed the second kidney transplant in South Africa in October 1967.

Then just two months later on 3 December 1967 (and assisted by his own brother), Christiaan Barnard performed the world’s first human heart transplant operation.

Later he wrote, “For a dying man it is not a difficult decision because he knows he is at the end. If a lion chases you to the bank of a river filled with crocodiles, you will leap into the water, convinced you have a chance to swim to the other side.”

Follow Christiaan Barnard, as he developed remarkable skills and methods to help people all over the world.  He dedicated his life and work to the medical profession.  His achievements have had a profound influence on the world of cardiac surgery. Gain a personal insight into the life of ‘the man with the Golden Hands’.

Elvis – A birthday we will always remember!

Posted on Updated on

Celebrating the birthday of the iconic Elvis Presley on the 8th January, really brings home just how much musicians have touched our hearts.

Elvis3

In this unique BioView® you can meet Elvis Presley. He became a cultural icon all over the world and is one of the most famous singers of the 20th century. His Bioview® is a short biographical story, similar to an interview with Elvis himself.

You may know and love many of his songs and movies, but how much do you know about his real life? His story from The Amazing People Club will give students a new insight on the real life of the “The King”. They can follow him from the two-room shotgun house in Tupelo where he was born, to the time he first walked into Sun Records in Memphis, which changed his life.

Imagine life without music!

Even Albert Einstein had something to say about how music moved him – “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.”

imagine music

Music is in the air – literally – with many music talent shows on the television, we are blown away by the talent of these budding artists. They may go on to become household names, just as Elvis did and the amazing musicians of the past.
