What has the iPad got to do with Christopher Columbus?

He has come a long way from exploring new territories, not knowing what he may find! Columbus has ventured into a very different ‘territory’…..that of the iPad!

Almost every household has one (or more) iPads and now they are in our classrooms providing a captivating way for students to learn.

Here at Amazing People Education, we are constantly researching and updating our resources to include modern technology, and the growing trend toward more exciting ways to teach and capture the interest of students. It is our aim to provide teachers and parents with the best resources and tools to assist them in class activities and learning. We work toward specific goals to assist in raising awareness and appreciation of the work and achievements of our fore fathers and mothers, who invented many amazing products that have developed into the gadgets and technology of today, just like the iPad!

Christopher Columbus set sail on his first voyage on August 3, 1942.

Students can explore the life of this amazing explorer, colonizer and navigator in many ways. Christopher Columbus discovered new worlds and his BioView® reveals how he did it and why.  His sensational journey was amazing as he discovered the Americas. Columbus was the first European, since the Vikings, to discover the New World, without the assistance of a compass or an accurate map!  He was a passionate pioneer who led the way for other explorers that followed in his footsteps. Task:

  • Draw a picture showing Columbus as he sees land for the first time in the distant horizon. Add a caption to your picture describing the scene you have created.

William Shakespeare – FREE eBook and Audio for April

William Shakespeare was born in 1564, and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon.

His actual date of birth may not be known, however, the people in Stratford-upon-Avon celebrate his birthday on the 23rd of April. What we do know is that he was baptized on 26th April, 1564 and is one of the world’s greatest writers.

Over 450 years ago, little did we know that the birth of William Shakespeare would bring us so many memorable literary pieces. He wrote many well-known plays, sonnets and narrative poems and received payment for his plays, as thousands of people regularly went to the theatre. He became a very wealthy man and his wealth enabled him to develop one of the most expensive homes in Stratford-upon-Avon. His family lived there, but most of his time was spent in London, where his name as a playwright was gaining recognition.

In the centuries to follow, William Shakespeare became world-renowned. His work has continued to grow in popularity. His stories and other plays, including comedies, histories and tragedies, are still performed around the world, 450 years after his death.

ShakespeareIt is said that he wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets and various poems, during his successful career. Often referred to as England’s national poet and the ‘Bard of Avon’, Shakespeare is one of the world’s most revered writers of all time.

Would you like to visit London or the birthplace of Shakespeare? You could visit the Shakespeare Centre Library and Archive, The Globe Theatre, where many of Shakespeare’s plays were originally performed or visit his birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon.

Marco Polo – FREE eBook and Audio for October

“Marco”  –  “Polo”  –  “Marco”  –  “Polo” – children (and adults!) in swimming pools all shouting out in a game of ….. cat and mouse ….. the swimming pool game where one person closes their eyes, shouts out “Marco” and the others reply with “Polo”.  ‘Marco’ has to try to catch those that shout out ‘Polo’.

 

 

History states that the explorer, Marco Polo, was lost and he thought he heard his family calling his name, ‘Marco’ and he replied with ‘Polo’.

One such incredible explorer was Marco Polo. The extensive adventures of Marco Polo have undoubtedly had a major impact on world history.  His pioneering travels throughout China and Asia opened up new worlds to western civilization.  Get an in-depth insight into his exciting life and discover what it was that drove him forwards no matter how difficult the journey. Due to his father’s extensive travels, Marco Polo did not meet his father until he was a young teenager! He then set off with his father and uncle exploring the world.

Captain James Cook – May 24 1770

During a short caravan trip in Queensland, Australia, I saw things that reminded me of the amazing people and places that our author (and keen traveller), Dr. Charles Margerison has written about.

As I discovered, these wonderful and inspiring stories stay with you. It is no wonder that Dr Charles became so dedicated to writing BioView® stories about them, thus keeping history and its’ amazing people…. ‘alive’.

Camping at Seventeen Seventy (1770), our walk took us up high around the perimeter of the cliffs overlooking the ocean. This is the sight of the second landing of Captain James Cook on May 24,1770. The community of 1770 hold the re-enactment of this historic landing in May each year as part of the annual 1770 Festival.

The team here at the Amazing People Club are very proud to announce that our own Dr Charles Margerison received a nomination in the ‘Cultural Achievement’ category at the Annual Australia Day Awards here on the Gold Coast.

Team members Marion Andersson and Janine Wakefield accompanied Dr Margerison and were there to congratulate him as he was presented with his award by Mayor Tom Tate.  This is a great achievement and something we are all very proud of.
