Celebrate 4th July!

We the People

franklin 1 - CopyBenjamin Franklin, one of the leaders of the American Revolution said, “We must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.”

He lived to tell the story of the famous victory over the British Army of King George III and the formation of the USA Government in 1789. Now, school students can recreate those exciting times with innovative music and drama resources from Amazing People Worldwide.

‘We The People’ is based on the first words of the American Constitution.  Those words are the defining anthem song featured and reflects the spirit of the revolutionaries, who changed the course of history.

This video link, ‘We the People’, is an excerpt from an educational video series that we have produced.Play demo button

The video assists teachers and students to have a more personal engagement and understanding of the important principles about the USA and Amazing Americans. They can be used in various ways, including school assemblies, drama classes, history and also character and culture education.  (We also have the Australian First Fleet and the British Cavaliers and Roundheads – covering other cultures and parts of the curriculum).
washingtonIn 1765, a group called The Sons of Liberty formed and opposed British rule without fair representation. It was the start of the American Revolution and the battles that led to the formation of a democratic federation.

Twenty four years later, George Washington, who had commanded the revolutionary army, became the first President of the USA.
Students learn by participating. In doing so, they develop a better understanding of history, geography, culture and conflict. Most important, they learn about themselves and grow in confidence.

‘We The People’ is an opportunity for students to develop their own abilities through drama.

Famous and Inspirational Americans

washingtonWatch our AVATAR video as George Washington talks about the Declaration of Independence.

edisonThomas Edison was a great American inventor, scientist and businessman and the third most prolific inventor in history.

lincoln-AbeAbraham Lincoln was a man who stood up for his beliefs and deserves credit for setting the foundations for unifying diverse states into a country.

fordIt is interesting to see how people like Henry Ford also developed their careers. He came from a poor family background to be one of the most successful American businessmen of all time.
tubmanLife stories such as that of brave people like Harriet Tubman a slave, are fascinating. How did she overcome those early, harsh days? They may be the exceptions, but America does have a habit of producing people who stand out.

On Independence Day, we remember and appreciate these wonderful Americans. They came from all walks of life, but they had the same drive and belief that they could achieve their dreams. Their dreams made a difference to the whole nation. From Colonial Men and Women, Politicians, Inventors, Entrepreneurs and Doctors, their stories are the foundation of America and you can bring them into your classroom.

Amazing People Education: Are you thinking of becoming a Doctor? Women with can-do attitudes!

Posted on Updated on

Elizabeth Blackwell was born on February 3, 1821.

Doctor, reformer, educator!

EBlackwell2

She paved the way for women in medicine.

Despite many rejections and criticisms, Elizabeth Blackwell persevered and went on to become one of the greatest pioneers in the development of health care for women.  She trained many female doctors along the way and her story is so inspirational.

It is accepted now that females may decide to study to become a doctor.

  • Can you imagine, the prestige bestowed upon Elizabeth when she became the FIRST woman to receive a medical degree in the USA?
  • Then to be named the FIRST female to be registered as a doctor in the UK?

It was no simple feat. Certainly, her work led her to be admired and revered. Elizabeth_blackwell_stamp

“Who inspires you?”  Perhaps Elizabeth Blackwell will inspire you in whatever you choose to do. We often lean towards people who have achieved their goals, particularly if they had to ‘climb over’obstacles in their way.

So, if you are interested in studying to become a doctor, here’s a ‘must-read’ story.

blackwell

To know and appreciate the background of women in medicine, gives you an insight into the difficulties they had to achieve their goals. Yes, many of us work and study hard today, but we have many pioneers to thank for the research and discoveries that we, at times, may take for granted.

We need YOU now, to forge forward developing new techniques and methods and possible new discoveries – as we know, there is always something to learn. YOU are now the ‘Elizabeth Blackwell’s’ of the future. Meet Elizabeth and let her be your guide to success.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Where was Elizabeth born?
  2. What was the name of the college that accepted her application to study to become a doctor?
  3. When she graduated, no-one would hire Elizabeth. Where did she go to practice medicine?
  4. When and where did she open her first practice?

Amazing People Education – Karen Horney

Posted on Updated on

Today, we hear a lot about a person’s mental health. We see the struggles of others in our own circles and in the media every day and sadly, also see some of their actions as a result of their issues.

Emotions_-_3 - Copy

Psychology has become very much a part in the workplace today  also. Businesses spend a considerable amount of time and money into investigating how to make people and organisations more effective.  Scientific research is used to study people, the workplace and organisations to better understand what and how to create a proactive, healthy and productive relationship between those involved.

For many years, amazing individuals have dedicated their lives to understand what makes people ‘tick.’

horney

One such person was Karen Horney.

Despite suffering from depression herself, Karen Horney became one of the first women to qualify as a medical doctor in Germany and the first female to qualify and practice in the fields of psychoanalysis and psychiatry. She took a deep interest in the causes of conflict in personal relationships.

Karen presented original and advanced theories regarding neurosis and her contributions to the psychology of women, in particular, have had a profound effect on how psychoanalytic therapy is approached today.

“The perfect normal person is rare in our civilization. Concern should drive us into action, not into a depression” – Karen Horney

Psychology in Business

psychology and business

Innovators like Thomas Edison, Dr Elizabeth Blackwell, Albert Einstein and other proactive thinkers, combined both rational and emotional thinking to the resolution of problems. How people perceive a problem and their ways of solving it, will influence the outcome. Likewise, the motivation and energy people have for solving problems will also have an effect on the issues.

Questions:

  • When did Karen Horney commence medical school?
  • When and whom did she marry?
  • Karen moved to what country in 1926?
  • How many neuroses did she identify? How can psychology help businesses? Write a page on the benefits of psychology in the workplace, from managers to employees and the roles they play in a successful business. What are sound practices that can be introduced to the workplace? How often should management and staff reinforce these lessons? What are the benefits of an on-line learning platform for employees?

Amazing People Education – Mother Teresa

Posted on

A beacon of hope, humanity and compassion to all, Mother Teresa’s personal story will inspire many.

* Can she also inspire us in the workplace and education?
mother-teresa

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one”

With a rare sense of wisdom, destiny, courage and dedication, Mother Teresa left her native Albania to pursue the vocation of teaching in Calcutta, India. Unable to ignore the desperation of the needy and sick, Mother Teresa became a missionary. Today, she is credited with helping hundreds of thousands of the world’s poorest people and is recognized as the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta by the Catholic Church.

After she founded the Missionaries of Charity, and with the assistance of many dedicated others, Mother Teresa ran homes and hospices for many suffering with HIV/Aids, leprosy and tuberculosis. She organized mobile clinics, soup kitchens, children’s and family counselling programs, orphanages and schools.mother teresa

Mother Teresa was the recipient of numerous honors including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

In 2003, she was beatified as the “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta”.

How can the story of Mother Teresa, be applied in our private lives and within the workplace?

The Poor Entrepreneur

There is no doubt, that Mother Teresa herself, was an entrepreneur. Vastly different to entrepreneurs known for their wealth, or access to wealth, that enabled them to do great acts for others. Mother Teresa worked her entire life with the poor. With no hospitals or clinics, she began working to give them medical treatment, which led to the establishment of Missionaries of Charities all over the world. Her actions and dedication show us how those traits alone, can ‘move mountains’.

Moving Mountains Businessmen moving a mountain uphill. The men & mountain and background are on separate labeled layers.

‘CAN DO’ The message: Stay true to your convictions, don’t allow negatives to stand in the way of what you know you can be achieved. With your determined nature and assistance, you too, can ‘move mountains’.

Leaders and Managers

Many leaders and managers can take a leaf out of Mother Teresa’s journey. Not only did she give up any idea of a normal working life and a family of her own, she also lived among the poorest people in Calcutta. This truly sparked her drive and ambition as she lived exactly the same way as they did, eating the same food and sharing their pain. Not motivated by power or money, she achieved exactly what she had set out to do and she is remembered and revered with much respect.

colorful SUCSESStext barcode, vector

‘SUCCESSFUL LEADERSHIP’ The message: As leaders, we should always remember to get to know the experiences of those we lead.  What effect do our actions as leaders have on others? Do we truly understand their roles in the workplace or at school and what we expect from them? Putting ourselves in ‘their shoes’ will refine our own thoughts on how to assist others, to achieve better results.

Activity:

You will note many words in red above. * The answer to that very first question – absolutely. Whether in our personal lives, education or work, those words are vital aspects and traits for successful interaction with others and for a positive outcome, whatever it is we are hoping to achieve.

  • List another 10 words that can be used to promote yourself and others, to promote the goals you want, and to promote positive thoughts and actions.
  • Then explain how you believe each word may assist the outcome of your future and that of those around you.

Amazing People Education – Letter to Coco Chanel

Gabrielle Dorziat

 May 1912

My dear Coco,

I thoroughly enjoyed our day together last week. That hat, my goodness darling, that hat I modeled for you? I must have it!  All my friends are dying to see your next creations. My dear, they are waiting with great fervor to buy up all those beautiful hats. What am I to do? Ah, I must simply make you my exclusive milliner!

Dearest Coco, what is that creative little mind of yours dreaming up today? All my friends are saying that you will be famous one day! Maybe one day people all over the world will be talking about you. Maybe women will be wearing not just your hats, but dresses, coats, lingerie or maybe fragrances and bags and…oh my dear, I could go on and on.

Well my dear, I must go now. I am so exhausted from my theatre performance last night. It was a full house and we received a standing ovation.

Ps. I have popped in a little photo of me from the magazine in that gorgeous hat! I look quite stunning don’t you think?

Gabrielle Dorziat

Au revoir, Gabrielle x

 Meet Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel, P

Coco Chanel was born on August 19, 1883.

She was, and still is, one of the most influential style icons of all time. Everyone knows the Chanel brand, but few know the inspirational rags-to-riches story behind it. Who would have known that this humble girl born in a poor house, would achieve such phenomenal success! Coco Chanel is still regarded as a fashion icon, long after her death.

Coco was known for her incredible ambition and determination throughout her life. She associated with the ‘right circles’ and together with her unique talent, she achieved both success as a business woman and acquired great social prominence.

Lessons from High Achievers

Successful individuals like Coco Chanel, identified their unique talents and developed them to produce remarkable outputs that shaped the world in a variety of ways.

“Hard times arouse an instinctive desire for authenticity”, Coco Chanel.

Your Goals

A good starting point when thinking about your future goals, is to look at what areas you are going to develop.  Coco would have honed in on her sewing skills and made decisions based on what she knows best and felt comfortable in developing. Developing is an ongoing activity, as one continually needs to review and improve existing processes.

To achieve goals we need to take action

The old model has been to teach, learn and do, however, it is far more effective to begin with action.  Once we take action, then that is in fact ‘doing’ something, and from that, we in turn have learned something.  So it is a bit of a twist on the old school of thinking.  It is well established that people develop competence by taking action.

Strategy

Coco Chanel’s  initial marketing strategy was to generate a buzz around her new perfume fragrance by hosting what was essentially a promotional event, where she invited a group of elite friends to dine with her in an elegant restaurant. The success was immediate and phenomenal. Chanel’s friend  exclaimed: “It was like a winning lottery ticket!”

Business Action

Amazing people like Coco Chanel, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Helena Rubinstein, all have one thing in common – they all became multi-millionaires without going to a University or a Business School! Instead they chose to get into ‘business action’ and learn from experience.  They just DID IT!

José Iván Bernardo VázquezYou have been given a new product to promote, to ‘get’ it known to the public and to approach retailers to place this product in their store/s.

  • What is the product? (The world is your oyster! Let your imagination run wild!)
  • What are your strategies to market and develop the product, that will encourage the public to buy it?

Questions:

  • What Christian name was Coco given at birth?
  • How did she learn to sew?
  • In what year did Coco open her millinery boutique at 21 Rue Cambon, Paris?
  • What very successful product was launched on May 5, 1921?
