Amazing People Education – Mother Teresa

Posted on

A beacon of hope, humanity and compassion to all, Mother Teresa’s personal story will inspire many.

* Can she also inspire us in the workplace and education?
mother-teresa

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one”

With a rare sense of wisdom, destiny, courage and dedication, Mother Teresa left her native Albania to pursue the vocation of teaching in Calcutta, India. Unable to ignore the desperation of the needy and sick, Mother Teresa became a missionary. Today, she is credited with helping hundreds of thousands of the world’s poorest people and is recognized as the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta by the Catholic Church.

After she founded the Missionaries of Charity, and with the assistance of many dedicated others, Mother Teresa ran homes and hospices for many suffering with HIV/Aids, leprosy and tuberculosis. She organized mobile clinics, soup kitchens, children’s and family counselling programs, orphanages and schools.mother teresa

Mother Teresa was the recipient of numerous honors including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

In 2003, she was beatified as the “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta”.

How can the story of Mother Teresa, be applied in our private lives and within the workplace?

The Poor Entrepreneur

There is no doubt, that Mother Teresa herself, was an entrepreneur. Vastly different to entrepreneurs known for their wealth, or access to wealth, that enabled them to do great acts for others. Mother Teresa worked her entire life with the poor. With no hospitals or clinics, she began working to give them medical treatment, which led to the establishment of Missionaries of Charities all over the world. Her actions and dedication show us how those traits alone, can ‘move mountains’.

Moving Mountains Businessmen moving a mountain uphill. The men & mountain and background are on separate labeled layers.

‘CAN DO’ The message: Stay true to your convictions, don’t allow negatives to stand in the way of what you know you can be achieved. With your determined nature and assistance, you too, can ‘move mountains’.

Leaders and Managers

Many leaders and managers can take a leaf out of Mother Teresa’s journey. Not only did she give up any idea of a normal working life and a family of her own, she also lived among the poorest people in Calcutta. This truly sparked her drive and ambition as she lived exactly the same way as they did, eating the same food and sharing their pain. Not motivated by power or money, she achieved exactly what she had set out to do and she is remembered and revered with much respect.

‘SUCCESSFUL LEADERSHIP’ The message: As leaders, we should always remember to get to know the experiences of those we lead.  What effect do our actions as leaders have on others? Do we truly understand their roles in the workplace or at school and what we expect from them? Putting ourselves in ‘their shoes’ will refine our own thoughts on how to assist others, to achieve better results.

Activity:

You will note many words in red above. * The answer to that very first question – absolutely. Whether in our personal lives, education or work, those words are vital aspects and traits for successful interaction with others and for a positive outcome, whatever it is we are hoping to achieve.

  • List another 10 words that can be used to promote yourself and others, to promote the goals you want, and to promote positive thoughts and actions.
  • Then explain how you believe each word may assist the outcome of your future and that of those around you.

Amazing People Education – Letter to Coco Chanel

 May 1912

My dear Coco,

I thoroughly enjoyed our day together last week. That hat, my goodness darling, that hat I modeled for you? I must have it!  All my friends are dying to see your next creations. My dear, they are waiting with great fervor to buy up all those beautiful hats. What am I to do? Ah, I must simply make you my exclusive milliner!

Dearest Coco, what is that creative little mind of yours dreaming up today? All my friends are saying that you will be famous one day! Maybe one day people all over the world will be talking about you. Maybe women will be wearing not just your hats, but dresses, coats, lingerie or maybe fragrances and bags and…oh my dear, I could go on and on.

Well my dear, I must go now. I am so exhausted from my theatre performance last night. It was a full house and we received a standing ovation.

Ps. I have popped in a little photo of me from the magazine in that gorgeous hat! I look quite stunning don’t you think?

 Meet Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel, P

Coco Chanel was born on August 19, 1883.

She was, and still is, one of the most influential style icons of all time. Everyone knows the Chanel brand, but few know the inspirational rags-to-riches story behind it. Who would have known that this humble girl born in a poor house, would achieve such phenomenal success! Coco Chanel is still regarded as a fashion icon, long after her death.

Coco was known for her incredible ambition and determination throughout her life. She associated with the ‘right circles’ and together with her unique talent, she achieved both success as a business woman and acquired great social prominence.

Lessons from High Achievers

Successful individuals like Coco Chanel, identified their unique talents and developed them to produce remarkable outputs that shaped the world in a variety of ways.

“Hard times arouse an instinctive desire for authenticity”, Coco Chanel.

Your Goals

A good starting point when thinking about your future goals, is to look at what areas you are going to develop.  Coco would have honed in on her sewing skills and made decisions based on what she knows best and felt comfortable in developing. Developing is an ongoing activity, as one continually needs to review and improve existing processes.

To achieve goals we need to take action

The old model has been to teach, learn and do, however, it is far more effective to begin with action.  Once we take action, then that is in fact ‘doing’ something, and from that, we in turn have learned something.  So it is a bit of a twist on the old school of thinking.  It is well established that people develop competence by taking action.

Strategy

Coco Chanel’s  initial marketing strategy was to generate a buzz around her new perfume fragrance by hosting what was essentially a promotional event, where she invited a group of elite friends to dine with her in an elegant restaurant. The success was immediate and phenomenal. Chanel’s friend  exclaimed: “It was like a winning lottery ticket!”

Business Action

Amazing people like Coco Chanel, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Helena Rubinstein, all have one thing in common – they all became multi-millionaires without going to a University or a Business School! Instead they chose to get into ‘business action’ and learn from experience.  They just DID IT!

Amazing People Education – Lessons from Elvis (or Ed Sheeran)?

Posted on Updated on

Elvis Presley

Yes. Lessons from Elvis! What sort of lessons are we suggesting from this iconic singer who gyrated his way onto television and the big screen?

The anniversary of the death of ‘The King’ is August 16. Elvis left behind, a huge fan base, music and movie memories and…………..lessons.

elvis 1954 jailhouse rock
Elvis 1957

Believe it or not, entertainers like Elvis, can show us how to follow our dreams, how to persevere and make things happen. Lessons on how to utilise our ideas, push forward and to chase our goals no matter what. Few successful entertainers would have let anything stand in their way to achieve their goals.

Often, the younger generation who are looking for assistance in development and career directions, like to be stimulated with the achievements of those that they can be ‘more in tune with’. More often than not, students are given examples about famous people like successful business people, doctors, nurses, engineers and architects.

Young people are always searching for something new and often they relate better to ‘other’ unique individuals. As they embark on their own journey, future generations need inspirational ideas that reflect more modern times.

Looking towards a bright, successful future

Entertainers are perfect examples of the traits required to succeed. Think about their careers in the entertainment industry. They constantly have to be better than the rest and better than their last performance, otherwise their careers are in jeopardy. They may have a team of assistants, but everything ‘rides’ on their own personal performances. That’s a lot of pressure!

Performance Review and Discussion as a Concept
Traits for success

Look at the following traits: Ambition, ideas, determination, goals, boldness, conviction, dedication, energy  and self-confidence. Entertainers would have to posses all those traits and more to be successful in their careers.

How did Elvis do it?

Elvis had to overcome an embarrassing stutter, so it wasn’t all ‘smooth sailing’ on his journey to stardom. In 1953, Elvis went to Sun Records to record songs ‘supposedly’ as a gift for his mother. Later, biographers suggested that Elvis chose to go to Sun hoping to be discovered. If this was the idea he had in mind, then Elvis clearly displayed  a very clear thought process with a goal in mind. It was a great idea! He had singing and acting talent, but without the traits to go with that talent, he would not have succeeded.

Rejection and Persistence

Elvis had to deal with several rejections at the beginning. He failed an audition for a local vocal quartet. They said he couldn’t sing and did not have an ear for harmony. After another audition as a vocalist, Elvis was rejected and was advised to continue driving trucks because he would never make it as a singer.

Did Elvis give up?

Just a year later on July 19, 1954, Elvis released his first commercial single, “That’s alright” and as they say, “the rest is history”. Elvis never wavered from his belief and what he wanted to achieve. Clearly, having the right attitude and desires, helped Elvis to reach his goals and to maintain consistency in the entertainment industry for many years.

Elvis Presley is regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, and he was dubbed “the King of Rock and Roll”, or simply, “the King”.

  • When and where was Elvis born?
  • When was Elvis given his first guitar?
  • What was the nickname of Elvis’ manager, Tom Parker?
  • How old was Elvis when he received the Lifetime Of Achievement Award?
  • Open discussions about today’s entertainers. Who is a worthy entertainer that has displayed the traits to succeed? eg. Ed Sheeran is a remarkable performer.

Fast becoming a modern day philanthropist, Sheeran has performed for many charities. His relaxed approach displaying a true selfless attitude toward others including his fans, makes Ed Sheeran an entertainer our younger generation can look up to. Both in terms of his mild-mannered success and his ability to share his life without expectations is inspiring.

Amazing People

ShakespeareMozart 2

Marie Curie

Einstein, Albert. P - avatar

Coco Chanel, P

ShakespeareMozartMarie CurieEinstein and Coco Chanel all had one thing in common. They were all amazing people, although all had different areas of interest and skills.

These are just a few of over 500 amazing people who I have studied to discover how they developed their talents. As a result, I have derived a number of important points from which we can all learn.

  • The first is that all the amazing people identified what they were good at
  • Then, they concentrated on using their talents to the best of their abilities
  • That meant that they focused their time and efforts on developing their skills

I believe that each person has the potential to be amazing at something, if they give it their time and practise regularly. This is the case in all aspects of life, from bricklaying, painting and surgery, to sport, music and art.

Amazing Contributions

Like Jonas Salk, who developed the polio vaccine, his contribution to medicine prevented further epidemics of this disease.salk resized

In what areas can you make amazing contributions?

Here is a checklist of some of the areas in which others have excelled. Go through the list and rank the areas in which you think you can make significant contributions in your own way.

  1. Improve social conditions by fighting for civil rights
  2. Conduct research into the causes of, and cures for, many illnesses
  3. Represent people in politics and government
  4. Develop a successful business
  5. Explore new territories
  6. Improve production and productivity via engineering skills
  7. Create beautiful music
  8. Produce outstanding works of art
  9. Design magnificent buildings
  10. Write software or produce websites to improve online communication
  11. Improve travel by air, train, boat or road
  12. Develop retail and distribution organizations to supply foods and goods
  13. Conduct new surgical procedures to save lives
  14. Produce new innovations
  15. Help others who are less fortunate

Amazing Personal Development

Helen-Keller

If ever there was a story of great personal development, then Helen Keller’s is top of the list. Despite disabilities, she succeeded in many ways, making major contributions to our world.

Once you know where you want to focus, your next step is to have a personal development plan to achieve your dreams and ambitions. It is useful to look at what others have done as a guide to your own efforts. Some of the areas in which you may wish to focus your efforts are listed below.

The checklist can be used to look at what others have done and a reference for planning your own action. In the BioViews® that I have written, I used this checklist as a basis for assessing those who made amazing contributions in each area.

  1. Creativity – how people developed and used ideas
  2. Achievement – how people produced valuable outputs from ideas
  3. Business – how people made fortunes
  4. Philanthropy – how people used money to support charity and art
  5. Motivation – how people who did amazing things were inspired to act
  6. Persistence – how amazing people continued in the face of doubt and opposition
  7. Communication and Promotion – how people who were successful promoted their work
  8. Finances – how amazing people funded their work from investors and sponsors
  9. Research – how people tested ideas and theories
  10. Politics – how the amazing people gained political support for their ideas

Summary

Of course, we are all amazing people, as no two of us are alike. In a competitive world, we are all judged by our contributions in different areas. Each one of us can improve our performance through concentration and practise.

We all have our own thoughts and dreams. Some people make their ideas come alive. Others have regrets. Which do you prefer? You can start today on a new amazing journey.
