Governor Arthur Phillip is an example of great leadership.
Appointed to command The First Fleet to Australia in 1787, Arthur Phillip showed how his decisions shaped the beginning of this amazing country. Arriving at Botany Bay, Arthur Phillip soon realized that this site was not suitable for settlement. Lack of good water, poor soil conditions spurned Arthur on to find a new area for the settlement. A wise decision. Travelling on, they headed toward Port Jackson and eventually landed at Sydney Cove (which Phillip named after Lord Sydney) on 26 January 1788, which is now known as Australia Day.
Imagine you had to sail 10,000 miles to an island in the South Pacific Ocean in an old wooden boat. In 1788, that happened to over 1400 English convicts, colonists, captains and men of the Marine Corps. Watched by fearful local Aboriginals, they established a base in a place called New South Wales, Australia.
