In fact, she was arrested several times and imprisoned. Did this deter her? For this passionate woman who believed in equality, the answer was unequivocally, NO!

Witnessing the oppressive position of women in society, Emmeline Pankhurst focused on how women could get equal rights and particularly, the right to vote.

As one of the most important of campaigners for women’s civil liberties, she actually lost her own on many occasions, being arrested for leading marches and protests.  In the history of Britain, Emmeline Pankhurst’s name stands out as a champion, as she led the way in fighting for the rights that modern women now have.

She co-founded The Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and her contributions as a women’s rights activist today, form the focus of study for many courses in politics and women studies.
